Summary of 2020 Leadership Academy
February 6th – 8th, 2020
The COVID-19 Pandemic started shortly after YWLA 2020. Sadly, several teams’ hard work of planning community events to share what they had learned at YWLA were canceled due to Shelter in Place orders. It was an extremely hectic time of uncertainty and rapid transition. Many of the YWLA participants and their family members were still working outside of their homes. The YWLA staff worked with teams to brainstorm project alternatives and were impressed with what the teams were able to create under such difficult circumstances.
Four teams reshaped their plans and complete community projects in the midst of the unfolding pandemic:
- North Monterey County High School team created this video in Spanish about how to stay safe during the pandemic.
- The Nava College Prep team held a community zoom meeting, facilitated a Kahoot game about workplace safety and health. The team also invited guest speakers to talk about how safety and health impacts their jobs and discuss the ways that COVID-19 has changed that.
- The JR Wooden team had prepared a “mini YWLA” for ten continuation schools to attend. This event was to be a day-long field trip for students from other schools to participate in YWLA activities and learn about workplace health and safety for young workers. As part of their effort to get other schools to attend the team gave a presentation to the principals of the invited continuation schools in the LA district to explain the importance of raising awareness among their peers about teen worker rights and health and safety at work.
- The Pueblo Unido team took part in LOHP’s Safe Jobs for Youth Month social media campaign by sharing and reposting content about young workers.
